Maternity Dan Lü Mä - Plant fibre, Wood - Dan - Ivory Coast

Description
Maternity Dan Lü Mä - Plant fibre, Wood - Dan - Ivory Coast
Good condition, used with some signs of wear

Former Swiss and then French collections of African art.

Portrait of the favourite wife, this effigy of a mother carrying her child on her knees presents a physiognomy comparable to those of the zei-ge and deangle masks, with high cheekbones and a bulging forehead with a central ridge. The half-closed eyes are underlined with kaolin, the lips reveal metallic teeth, inlaid in the wood. Two side cones ending in long braids, to which the Dan would add plant fibres. Note a few missing pieces and cracks from desiccation (have a look at the pictures).
Gifts of women, food, festive ceremonies and an honourable status would formerly reward Dan sculptors to whom this talent was granted in a dream.
Wonderful patina, natural pigment (kaolin), especially for the eyes.

Former Swiss and then French collections of African art.
Included in the delivery: A certificate of authenticity signed both by the appraiser and by the gallery where I purchased it.
