Mask - Wood - Kholuka - Yaka - Congo DRC

Description
Mask - Wood - Kholuka - Yaka - Congo DRC
2nd half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

We can recognise the Yaka style by the upturned nose, the polychromy and especially the chubby figure on the summit of the mask.

This mask served for circumcision or Mbala ceremonies for the Ngoni and the Yiwilla clans of the Yaka. Hence, the figure represented on the summit is a young circumcised man.

Light-weighted polychrome wood in blue, red, white and patinated fabric for the puppet. I can also provide the raffia part of the mask which I removed.
