Ancestor statue - Wood - Mumuye - Nigeria

Description
Ancestor statue - Wood - Mumuye - Nigeria
2nd half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

The Mumuye live along the valley of the Benue, in the centre of Nigeria. The Chamba, the Tiv, the Mumuye, the Jukun and the Montols also live in this region. This Savannah region is known for its statuary; the most famous sculptures are the figurines of the Mumuye.

The form is slender, the very long arms are slightly separated from the body. The legs are massive and the knees are prominent. The ears are very long.

The hard wood presents a dark patina. The figurine was restored and glued back at the level of the arm.
