Closely related to the Luba with who they share common ancestors, the Songye live in the region of Shaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This Kifwebe mask of the Songye was worn with a long dress and a long bear in natural fibres. The latter are used in important ceremonies. Masks, dresses and colours have a symbolic meaning.
Colours indicate the characteristics of a new spirit.
