SONGYE KIFWEBE mask - Wood - DRC Ex Zaire
Good condition, used with some signs of wear

Closely related to the Luba with who they share common ancestors, the Songye live in the region of Shaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This Kifwebe mask of the Songye was worn with a long dress and a long bear in natural fibres. The latter are used in important ceremonies. Masks, dresses and colours have a symbolic meaning.
Colours indicate the characteristics of a new spirit.

Please note the very little hole on the left cheek (attached picture).
