African Bambara Horse Figure - Hard Wood - Bambara - Mali

African Bambara Horse Figure - Hard Wood - Bambara - Mali
Mid 20th century - in good condition, used with visible signs of wear and tear.

An interesting horse from the Bambara. The horse has a saddle on its back. Such puppets were used at a public masquerade in the region around the Bambara city of Ségou. This festival has a long tradition which can be found among the Bambara and the Bozo. Dance troops of young men, members of local youth groups, sing, dance, play the drum, manipulate puppets when presenting performances called Sogo Bo. Although they are considered to be a form of entertainment, they are focused on a description of universal morale and imperfection of people and the need to inform people of ethical conduct and how to reach a religious way of life.
The piece I'm offering here is an item from the end of the 19th century, early 20th century; the horse has been tribally intensively used what has left behind traces; in short a nice weathered authentic horse from the region of Mali.

Weight: 899 grams.
