Sculpture (1) - Wood - Mumuye - Mumuye - Nigeria

Description
Sculpture (1) - Wood - Mumuye - Mumuye - Nigeria
2nd half 20th century - Fair condition, used with visible signs of wear

It was not until the late 1960s, that statues from the Mumuye culture in north east Nigeria appeared on the European market for tribal art in Paris. The feelings roused by these were enormous: collectors and artists marvelled at the abstract interpretation of the human body by the Mumuye artists, which reminded them of cubist and expressionist art. This sculpture has a lovely old patina from lots of use. Provenance: Italiaander Collection.
