This type of mask is used by the Beete cult to honour the male gorilla, which is, in primitive mythology, considered to be the clan’s founding father, a mythical ancestor, and Lord of the Earth. In the Beete cult of the Kwele people, the gon mask embodies the primordial wild and untamed nature.
