Masonic Medallion - Marble of Istria - 19th / 20th century

Masonic Medallion - Marble of Istria - 19th / 20th century
Italy, Venice

Refined and elegant freemasonry medallion made of Istrian marble, finely decorated and handmade, depicting the classical symbols of the freemasonry (set square and compass) with the letter “G” in the centre and a very fine garland enclosing the engravings that complete the work. Dating back to mid 19th century, from Venice (Masonic lodge founded in 1746) and located on a wall of a room of the places in which Masonic meetings and ceremonies took place.
The set square is said to depict the matter, and the compass depicts spirit and mind. The letter “G” depicts the set square and the compass that, in the Anglo-Saxon world depicts the word God; other valid interpretations are G.A.D.U. (Grande Architetto Dell'Universo - Great Architect Of the Universe) or the ‘G’ for Geometry.
