Attractive and rare Pende mask with round eyes and beautiful patina. There are clear signs of extensive use on the edges and the holes. Ex Jo De Buck Gallery, Brussels, a signed certificate will be transferred to the buyer.
Note there is one restored crack on the side of the mask, still visible from the back side from certain angles (see picture). Otherwise the mask is in great condition, with clear signs of use.
Yale van Rijn has a very similar mask under number "0057840", showing a similar mask with some hair and fivers still attached (see Paulo Morigi, Important African Art 2005). The listing is indicating there is a similar one to be found in Sousberghe L'art Pende (1959 : 40-41, ill. 12).
