Josep Ventosa Domènech (Barcelona, May 12, 1897 - Puerto de Andratx, 29 May 1982) painter. He studied at the school of fine arts of Sant Jordi (Llotja school), but he didn’t finish his studies.

He became interested in Cubism and later, he made a fleeting visit to surrealism and Futurism.
He moved to Brussels in order to know first hand the avant-garde movements. On his return to Barcelona heabandoned his interest for the avant-garde movements and he worked the figurative landscape under the influence of the Olot school. Josep Ventosa Domenech exhibited his works individually in Barcelona (1935) and in Brussels (1935). He participated in collective exhibitions in Barcelona, several European cities and South America. After the Civil War (1940), he moved his residence to Majorca.

He combined stays in the Puerto de Andratx, Sóller and Palma. He travelled often to Barcelona. He painted in Sóller, Andratx, Biniaraix, Tossa de Mar, Torrent de Pareis, sa Calobra, San Telmo, Valldemossa, Alaró, Lucas, Puigpunyent, Banyalbufar and other places in Sierra de Tramuntana. Married to Celia Gil, he didn’t have children. We can distinguish four stages in his work. The first one is the cubist and informalist stage, which was closed when he decided to dedicate himself to cubism. The second period, basically dedicated to the Catalan countryside, covers the 1930s, and is characterized by the use of a palette where greens and tender greens predominate, with slight contrasts of light and colour.

The third period covers from the arrival of the painter to Majorca until the mid-1950s. Under the influence of Majorca’s light, he painted marine art, landscapes and luminous port visions which were treated with a soft tone palette, getting close to the painters from the late 19th century. The fifth stage begins around the mid 1950s. At that moment he worked preferably on monumental landscapes, which he treated with silver grey colours, transparencies and blurred compositions.

In 1947 he exhibited his works in Galerías Costa (Palma). He also held an exhibition in Barcelona.Madrid, Sabadell, etc. The Rubines gallery (Palma), dedicated an anthological exhibition to him in 1979, on the occasion of his 80th birthday (which was in 1977) From 1980 onwards he exhibited his works in the Jaime III gallery (Palma).

In 1982 the city hall of Andratx named him honorary citizen of the town. On Saturday 29th of May 1982 he died in the Puerto de Andratx at the age of 85. In 1989 the Jaume III gallery (Palma) dedicated to him a great retrospective exhibition, which was complemented by the publication of a biographical monograph written by Rafael Perelló Paradelo. He was represented in the retrospective exhibition "100 años, 100 pintores (1993-93)", that took place at the Lonja on the occasion of the centenary of Última Hora. He has an entry in the GEM and another in the Gran Enciclopedia de la Pintura y la Escultura de Baleares.
