France - 1900-1949 - Spelter

Large and heavy equestrian statue in gilded spelter depicting a whole horse (not castrated) with the two front legs lifted, mounted by a mustachioed rider (Roman type) in chainmail with his sword and with his right hand on its mane. In equestrian statues, there is a rule that has unfortunately not always been followed, but which sometimes makes it possible to determine the conditions of the rider's death: when the horse has both front legs raised, its rider died in combat, and when only one front leg is raised, the rider died as a result of his injuries in combat. If all four legs are on the ground, the figure died of natural causes and not in combat. Repainted at a later date. Carefully packed tracked shipment.
