Woodblock print (reprint) - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - 'The Yodo River' - From the series "Famous Sights of Kyoto" - Second half 20th century
Published by Eisendo 栄川堂 (?)
The entire space of the sheet is taken up by the close up view of the ferry as being shared by all manners by the people, obviously enjoying themselves. There are non-travellers in the picture too. Parent and child on a barge selling food to the ferry people and a boatman poling away with all his might. Hiroshige individualizes these working folks with his characteristic sensitivity and completes this witty composition with the proverbial moon and cuckoo.
Apart from a few light flaws on the upper part of the picture, this print is in very good conditions (please see photos for further details).
