Emil Cardinaux (1877 -1936 ) was a swiss artist. He created an extensive work of various media.
He achieved fame, however, in the results from more than 130 posters, which attracted international attention.
He learned also figure drawing in the studio of Franz Stuck, who was one of the founders of the Munich Secession
“Susanna and the Elders” an episode described in the Book of Daniel.
The etching captures the moment when Susana bathes in her garden and two lustful elders secretly observe the lovely Susanna.
This subject is being recreated multiple times in art history by old masters (Rubens, Van Dyck … )
This beautiful interpretation with influence by symbolism and art nouveau is highly decorative.
You can see the influence of artists like: Odilon Redon, Ensor, Hodler, Valadon...
It is signed on the plate. It is framed and it has some signs of aging despite over 100 years the overall condition is very good.
