Uta-garuta card game set - Paper, Wood - Japan - 1910-1930

I offer for auction a very nice game set of uta-garuta or Hyakunin Isshu playing cards and their box.

Uta-garuta (lit. "Poetry Karuta") is a Japanese traditional playing cards. A set of uta-garuta contains 200 cards: 100 with a figure of a person (lord, lady, monk), and a poem, the other 100 only have the finishing phrases of the poems.

Two players compete in catching the figure cards matching the poem read by a third person holding the poem only cards.

The standard collection of poems used is the Hyakunin Isshu, an old selection existing since the 12th century. The game is played mostly on Japanese New Year holidays.

In this version the card to be taken are the wood one, while the reader will use the figures ones.

The cards (8x5cm) show signs of wear. All 200 cards are included, each with the seal of the manufacturing company 関根 Sekine.
