Woodblock print (reprint), Published by Adachi - Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) - 'Bridge in cloud at Gyôdôsan Ashikaga' - From the series "Famous Bridge in Various Provinces" - Heisei period (1989-2019)
It is recorded in the last volume of "A selection of Hokusai's Works".
Gyodosan ( meaning Mountain of Ascetics) is a mountain northwest of Ashikaga in Tochigi Prefecture ( formerly Shimotsuke Province).
Hokusai's brush work in Kanga ( Chinese painting ) style displays its strength when depicting such soaring peaks and rocks. The somewhat stylized composition of this print, however, leads us to suspect that it was a result of his imagination. The focus of the picture must rather be the white cloud trailing in the sky. Its sub-title Kumo no Kakehashi (Cloud Bridge) undoubtedly refers to the high bridge connecting the tops of steep cliffs, but it is possible that Hokusai likened the belt-like band of cloud to a bridge built by Nature.
