Giovan Francesco Gonzaga, a self-taught painter and sculptor, was born in 1921 in Milan, where he did his artistic training.
Even when he was a boy, he spent hours in the Sforza castle museum copying the studies and drawings by the great artists of the past such as Leonardo and Michelangelo.
After his diploma, against the will of his family, he volunteered in the Second World War with the ‘Savoia Cavalleria’, participating in patrol actions in the Russian steppe with the ‘Fantasma’ squadron.
He said about himself: “I am a decadent, an artist of the ‘crepuscolare’ school. I don’t drive a car.
I spent my childhood among neighs and stable scents... When I ride through the meadows, my heart wanders in the morning full of mists...”.
