Umberto Coromaldi was born in Rome on September 21, 1870. Shortly after his birth his father died, and his mother, in second marriage, married the painter Filippo Indoni who introduced Umberto to painting. He attended the Institute of Fine Arts where he had as a professor of drawing Filippo Prosperi. His training was completed by attending the studies of Antonio Piccinni, and Antonio Mancini.
In 1893 he participated in the exhibition of the Amatori e Cultori di belle arti in Rome and the following year he won the artistic pensioner, with the painting Ritorno dei naufragi. Thanks to the prize he was able to travel: he stayed and exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, Munich and Stuttgart.
