Corneille was born on 3 July 1922 as Guillaume Corneille van Beverloo from Dutch parents in Liège (Belgium). In 1940 Corneille moved to Amsterdam where he studied at the arts and crafts school (Kunstnijverheidsschool) and took a course in drawing and etching at the ‘Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten’ State Academy of Fine Arts). In 1948 together with Constant, Appel, Rooskens and Wolvecamp, Corneille established the 'Nederlandse Experimentele Groep' (the Dutch Experimental Group). Later during that same year, this group represents the Amsterdam branch of the CoBrA group which was established in Paris. CoBrA is an artists collective of novice painters from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. They use the coiled Cobra snake as a symbol. The group exists only 3 years but is known to such a large audience that even nowadays the CoBrA group is still world famous.
