(Cerchia di) Bernard Keil detto Monsù Bernardo - Ritratto di ragazza

(Cerchia di) Bernard Keil detto Monsù Bernardo - Ritratto di ragazza
Oil on canvas - Not signed - XVII Secolo d.C.

Antique painting, oil on canvas, 17th century, depicting a wonderful portrait of a girl.

The painting presents the typical style of the painter Bernard Keil known as Monsù Bernardo (1624 - 1687), both for stylistic and writing characteristics, as well as for the typology of the subject, typical of his production, suggesting precisely the attribution to Keil himself.
The girl's face finds a physiognomic and stylistic comparison with other artist canvases such as:
"Bambini con uva" of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, "Baccanale dei bambini" of the Prado Museum and "Tre ragazzi che giocano" awarded at Christie's auction (rooms 2525, lot 70, Milan, 24 November 2010).

Bernard Keil, known as Monsù Bernardo, came to Italy from his native Denmark, stayed in Venice from 1651 to 1654, then in Bergamo, in Romagna and finally in Rome starting from 1656.
His critical fortune was immediate, so much so that Filippo Baldinucci dedicated a biography to him in his 'Notizie de' professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua' (Florence 1728, VI, pp.
510-516), considering him a highly praised painter, whose paintings were in demand throughout Europe.
Keil portrayed elderly and young people, peasants and artisans with natural sensitivity, caught in simple gestures.
They are portraits of everyday life, where protagonists in elegant clothes rarely appear.
The execution is soft, but capable of sincerely describing the faces without ever transcending into the raw realism of Caravaggio style.

Framed with nice lacquered and golden boxed frame, from a fairly recent period.

In fairly good overall condition considering the age of the painting, you can see some scattered restorations and some scrapes on the pictorial surface, but nothing very relevant. There are no conservation issues and the original canvas is supported by an old re-lining that does not require restoration. It looks like the stretcher was replaced, probably when it was relined.

Canvas size: 42.5 x 38 cm. Frame size: 63 x 57.5 cm.

Shipped via insured express courier, packaged with the utmost care.
