Mirror - Brass - Tsuru kame - Enorm grote antieke spiegel (doukyou) met afbeelding van een schildpad en kraanvogel (tsuru kame) - Japan - ca 1900 (Meiji period)
Good condition, see description - 49.5×36×0.8 cm

Enormous antique mirror (doukyou) with an image of a turtle and a crane (tsuru kame) - Signed "Shigetsugu" 重次 - Japan - ca. 1900

The image on this mirror is based on the following Japanese saying: "tsura wa zennen, kame wa mannen", which means "a crane lives a thousand years, a turtle lives ten thousand years". Both the crane and the turtle live a long life in comparison to other animals. The crane only has one partner in life. This fact makes them the symbol for a long and happy life.

Dimensions: 49.5 cm x 36 cm - Weight 4.3 kg

The mirror is in good condition and is beautifully cast. The back (the non-reflective side) has a nice light patina. There is a little deposit on the reflective side. The reflection is still clearly visible beneath this deposit. This deposit can probably be removed with some warm water and soap
