Antique painting, oil on canvas, dating back to the late 16th and early 17th century, depicting a beautiful and evocative Penitent Magdalene.
The subject is taken from the Penitent Magdalene by Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1488 - Venice 1576) of which several original versions exist (St. Petersburg, Hermitage - Florence, Palazzo Pitti - Rijkmuseum, Amsterdam).
The painting, in a reduced head and shoulders version compared to Titian’s original work, shows peculiar characteristics that can be traced back to an author of the Venetian school, highlighting a quality of pigment and admirable preparation, resulting in a very valuable workmanship, so as to suggest that the author can be found among the master’s followers who frequented his studio.
Framed with beautiful and quite recent frame, which is golden and decorated with leaves pattern.
In fairly good overall condition considering the age of the painting, you can see some scattered old restorations and some scrapes on the pictorial surface, but nothing very relevant.
Along the four sides of the canvas, there seem to be some repainting about 1/2 cm wide, probably integrated to adapt the canvas to the frame size, which was possibly a few centimetres larger.
There are no conservation issues and the original canvas is supported by an old re-lining that does not require restoration. Please note signs of repairs of some cuts along the canvas. Fine craquelure compatible with its age. The stretcher was probably replaced at the time of the re-lining.
