This beautiful poster (lithograph), with the St. LOUIS, has a special story. When the passenger ship the St. Louis leaves the port of Hamburg on 13th May, 1939, the majority of the more than nine hundred passengers are German Jews. They hoped to get valid visas for the United States through the Cuban capital of Havana. However, this did not go as expected when the Cuban authorities refused to accept the refugees from the St. Louis. The US, too, kept their borders closed so that the ship had to return to Europe unsuccessfully..
Feverish consultations led to France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands being prepared to accept them.
