Leo Muysken (1907-1984) - Zicht op de vulkaan Merapi vanaf de Borobudur
Oil on canvas - Hand signed - 1950

Leonard Karel Anton Muysken (Pekalongan, 1907-The Hague, 1984) moved from the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands at the age of eight, where he started training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague in the late 1920s. In Leipzig, he later learns to manufacture animal figures in ceramics and works as a lion tamer. After WWII (Muysken fouhgt on the Grebbeberg), he became police commissioner in Indonesia, from where he returned to The Hague in 1959, together with his wife Edmée van Hemert. In their house on the Nassau Dillenburgstraat, Muysken shoots at birds in the garden, with an air gun from the front room. At his death he is highly praised by the public and the press as a successful sculptor, ceramicist and painter. The canvas to be auctioned here is not dated, but was made during Muyskens post-war stay in Indonesia. The life-size image of Buddha, bathing in the cleansing morning light and surrounded by numerous secretive stupas, is of an equally touching and timeless beauty.
