A beautiful and large expressionist and also impressionist painted work of the Groninger Ploeg painter Karel Arkema. It depicts an everyday scene in the village of Corbion in the municipality of Bouillon in Belgium against the French Border near Luxembourg
In 1954, he spent a month in Bouillon in the Ardennes, at the invitation of the Ministry of Education, Arts and Sciences and as part of a Belgian-Dutch exchange.

Karel Arkema (1901-1964) was born in Appingedam.
After completing the crafts school, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Minerva in Groningen.

Karel originally painted in a realist-expressionist style, but nevertheless was influenced by the expressionism of ‘De Ploeg’. Works by his wife also clearly reflected this. Karel was in constant search of his own style.
