Plate 5, from a series of 7 prints showing the Liberal Arts:
Geometry, a nude female holding a square and plumbline.
This print is ascribed to "Monogrammist B", whose identity is not known. The set of Liberal Arts are the only works ascribed to this engraver.
Inscription: 'GEOMETRIAM AB AEGYPTIS PRIMO INVENTA EST' and numbered "5"
On laid paper
The British Museum Online Collection (Museum number 1897,1117.13) and the online Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession Number: 27.78.2(257)) both illustrate impressions of this print. Comparing these two impressions with the impression on sale, the latter appears blacker and in many areas shows more fine detail, suggesting that it might be an earlier impression.
Condition: Fair impression. However, it has one larger tear and several small tears. Several areas with marks and foxing/discoloration of paper. Cut close to border. See photos.
