Special chirimen-gami (縮緬紙, crêpe paper) print with images, including mount Fuji, among others - Japan - circa 1880
Chirimen-gami were made by applying a certain high-pressure posttreatment to a Japanese woodblock print. This treatment resulted in the paper surface getting a wrinkled texture, and the surface area of a print being reduced with as much as 30%. The advantage of chirimen-gami was that it was stronger than untreated paper. This technique was popular in the 1880s. The last photo which has been added shows an image of the equipment used to make chirimen-gami.
The print is in very good condition and still has very bright colours. A number of very small holes, mainly in the margins.
Dimensions: 26.5 cm x 19 cm
The chirimen-gami print will be sent by registered post, in sturdy cardboard packaging.
