Original woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - The Sumida River in Edo and the dyke (Tōto Sumida-zutsumi) From the series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" - Japan - 1891
This art print was published in 1891 by Kodama Matashichi (active 1881–1894) and was printed with the original, partially edited (added were the date/lettering in the margins) woodblocks (1858). The print is part of a memorial edition of the ‘Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji’ series. Many of the woodblock prints from the earlier editions are now extremely rare. This memorial series provides a good opportunity to obtain an original woodblock print of these classic Hiroshige designs.
What makes this later ‘Memorial Edition’ recognisably different from previous editions is the presence of the extensive text in both the right and left margins.
