On the north- western border of India, in a mountain terriory covering the present states of ¨Pakistan and Afghanistan, an extraordinary artistic civilization has developed over the first centuries of our era.
Its artictic production as been called "the art of Gandhara", from the antique name of this region. The region was crossed by the caravan trail llinking the Western world to China and the lowlands of Central Asia, it went from Persain domination to Greek rule after Alexander the Great conquest, and stayed open to contacts with the indian civilization and with the remote regions of the roman empire.
It explains the fact that this art displays a singular melting of very diverse stylistic elements, reaching its climax when the area bacame a sacred land for buddhism, hence the often used denomination of "greek-buddhist art of Gandhara".
In monasteries and cities, blossoms a remarkable art inspired by religious beliefs. Anthropomorphic representations of Buddha first appear in Gandhara art, before being largely spread over all Asia.
This sculpture most probably represents a bodhisattva. There is clearly the presence of an ushnisha, the urna can be seen between the eye brows, and we can suppose that the halo stayed on the wall from wich the statue was removed.
He wears the traditional Kushan mustache, very often seen on Gandhara representations, jewels including a pectoral and a series of necklaces.
