Mesh embroidery is a very old technique, it began spreading with filling points only in the early 16th century up to the mid-17th century when it disappeared from inventories. However, in Germany it was reintroduced in pattern books up to 1750.
Lace with "filet" or embroidered mesh is truly like a fishing net: the most widespread technique, which is still employed today, features a special needle called Modano.
Once completed according to the desired size, the mesh is placed on a loom and turned into lace with needle stitching: the spaces of the mesh are filled with various embroidery stitches according to a design. Back then the mesh was also on the loom, but this technique is uncommon today.
