Biografia de Josep Cruañas Fagés (Mayà de Montcal, Gerona, 1942)
He was born in Maià de Montcal, Girona, in 1942. At the age of sixteen he attended drawing classes at the Banyoles art school, directed by Joan de Palau. At seventeen he attended the studio of the painter Joan Sibecas, in Figueres. His first individual exhibition took place in 1970. Since then he has held more than
two hundred exhibitions (individual and collective).
It has been possible to see his works in different places in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, as well as abroad, for instance in South Africa, Uruguay, Cuba, Malta, United States, Andorra and France. His works are present in different museums and he has obtained important prizes in painting contests at national level. In 1993 the publishing house of the Gran Enciclopedia Vasca published a monograph about his work, written by Joan Carrera and Elena María Morató.
An impressionist painter with abstract nuances, he transmits a special vaporosity within a very humid atmosphere. The gesture, the light effect, the density of his palette and the chromatic intensity due to neutral tones and the hints of chromatism are the main characteristics of his work. The prevailing subject matter is the landscape, both urban an rural, where one can appreciate different corners of Normandy, Paris, Cadaqués, L’Empordá, Barcelona, Venice, Amsterdam or New York.
