The small carved and painted wooden birds that were once made by lumberjacks in Viechtau (district of Gmunden) are real treasures.
This cottage industry developed as early as the 15th century. These Viechtau items peaked in the course of the last 100 years. The craftsmen joined together to form a cooperative that ultimately had more than 100 members.
The cooperative was shut down for good a little over 30 years ago.
