Zakpai Passport Mask - Dan - Ivory Coast
Provenance: private collection, Belgium.
Dimensions: 16 x 10 cm.
Materials: wood, fabric, metal.

This little African mask is actually a replica of a mask of lineage, it was worn by those who travelled.
Passport masks of this type offered to the travellers the protection of the ancestors during their trip. The soothsayer, who was consulted at the beginning of the travel, would prescribe if such a mask needed to be created. These pieces could also be used as witnesses during rites of passage.
This one is covered with red fabric which comes from colonial uniforms and that remind the famous mask of the Zakpai type. The glance of the face is enhanced with metallic circling surrounding the eyes.
These masks were not worn on the face but on the arm or on the hand.
