For your consideration is a charming and nicely carved Ibeji figure from the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
This figure represents a deceased twin, who would have been venerated through figures of the type known as Ibeji.
Ibeji figures would be commissioned upon the death of a twin or set of twins, and would then be treated as if it is the twin or twins, being washed, fed, played with, and respected like a person.
This practice of veneration was very popular in Nigeria during the 19th and 20th centuries, and even continues in different ways in parts of Ghana.
