Lot of Two Magnificent Tugubele Figurines
Tugubele statuettes used by soothsayers to communicate with benevolent spirits of nature. The name Tugubele is used both to refer to spirits and to mediating figurines. Artists who create Tugubeles have closely followed the instructions given by the soothsayer who would have been informed of some details regarding the required appearance of the figure, the gender, the posture, the marks of scarification, etc, directly by the spirit itself. Spirits would often contact soothsayers through their dreams. Have a look at Foerster (1988: 79-80) for a more in-depth discussion.
Height: 21.5 cm and 22.5 cm.
