Description
Writing slope, marquetry with presentation plaque 1st baron John Campbell - Burr walnut - mid 19th century
England

Walnut and ebony writing slope with an inset violet velvet writing surface and guilt tolled border. Beautifully detailed marquetry decoration to the outer and inner parts of the lids and the body, brass corners and brass folding handles to the sides. Main compartment under the writing lid for documents and smaller compartment locked separately for pens etc, lock is working and the key is included. Silver plaque to the top with a name J.Campbell. As the writing box was purchased at the auction in Edinburgh my guess is the box could have been used by John Campbell, 1st Baron Campbell, PC, QC, FRSE (15 September 1779 – 23 June 1861) who was a British Liberal politician, lawyer and man of letters born in Scotland and studied in St.Andrews, he was representing Edinburgh in British Parliament. Please see Wikipedia for his biography.
The box itself have some signs of wear, ebony and marquetry missing in places, some signs of repair, otherwise in a good condition. Size 12.5×37.5×36 cm
