Yamaha XS 1100 S - Classic touring buffalo.
Second, slightly 'slimmer' version of this bully-of-a-bike. This 3H3 was ‘grey’ imported in 1983, but built in 1979. It has been regularly used until 2013, it stood still ever since.
It needs a major service before using it. Battery, cleaning the carburetors, oil change, brake fluid replacement. The left side case is missing. It seems like a lot of work but it’s not too bad, it’s essentially a good bike. It doesn’t have to be expensive either.
Despite the 'S' in its type name it’s not a sports bike but rather one which accelerates fast, complete with Marchall-muted, primal sounds. Torque from 1500 revs is more its strength, nice to ride without having to shift gears too often. Such an XS never breaks down, what it’s meant to do, it will do ‘forever’. There aren’t many sidecars with such an 82HP block.
It is all the more remarkable that modern XJR cafe racers refer back to this authentic machine. And indeed: put a flat handlebar on it and it will look a lot nastier... Do you accidentally want to go fast? It can do it...
It's a cardan bike, but it shifts well and very smooth.
