Saint George, Russian wooden icon,
In the East George is one of the most represented saints. He is well liked in the West too; associations and even nations have chosen him to be their patron saint and churches have been dedicated to him. According to legend he was born in Cappadocia in the second half of the third century, and a soldier under emperor Diocletian. Because he refused to take part in the persecution of the Christians, and admitted he was a Christian himself, he was beheaded at the emperor's orders in 303, after having survived many tortures unharmed.

As early as the 4th century, the time of emperor Constantine the Great, St. George's Church in Lydda in Palestine was dedicated to him, where his relics are kept. That is commemorated in the Eastern church on the 3rd of November every year. The earliest written sources about the tortures and death of George go back to the 5th and 6th centuries, and the earliest images are nearly as old.

Most familiar to us is the scene of his spectacular fight against and victory over the dragon, the symbol of evil. St. George is represented in armour, mounted on his rearing horse, at the moment he brings down the dragon with his lance. Christ's blessing hand in the top corner indicates that victory is not won on one's own force, but on the strength of the cross and with God's blessing.
