A mortar or pestle is a cup with pestle that is used for grinding and blending. It is made from hard material (stone, bronze, copper, earthenware or crystal) and sometimes has a polished interior. In the kitchen the mortar is mainly used to fine grind herbs, for further use in sauces, soups, and marinades or to make an electuary.

This mortar still has the original pestle included. It is estimated that it is from the early 19th century. Height is 20 cm and with a diameter of 15 cm.
