This rug was knotted in central Persia. These high-quality rugs usually have medallion patterns with fields of flowers, but variations are possible. The patterns of Kashan rugs are often used as templates for machine-made rugs. Kashan rugs can be found in most European royal courts.
Kashan rugs are typically of high quality, with a lot of silk in their designs. The base is usually made of cotton but some of the best examples are made of pure silk. The wool has to be soft and the pile firmly knotted. Most Kashan rugs have a similar design with a central medallion and Persian floral motifs which form the pattern, but, as in most regions, designs may vary. Popular colours are ivory, red, blue and soft green.
Please take the time to study the rug in detail and enjoy this work of art.
