The rug was knotted in the city of Nain, in central Persia, near Isfahan. These rugs are usually very light, with a cream-coloured or deep blue base colour and a large, central medallion. The high quality of these rugs is a result of the high knot density and the first-class materials used. They are manufactured in most common sizes. This rug is one of the most beautiful rugs in the world, and very popular among collectors.
Nain rugs usually have a cotton base with very soft wool. Quality is not just measured in knots per square metre, which is around 300,000 on average, but also in LA. LA is a Farsi term that indicates the number of threads which form each border. A Nain with an LA of 9 is considered to be a good quality rug (yet it is the lowest quality of genuine Nains), while an LA of 4 is the best. LA is related to knots per square metre because it facilitates faster knotting.
