Antique glazed ceramic tile from Caltagirone (Sicily), from a personal collection of a famous Roman antiquarian. It features multiple colours and depicts the profile of a monk or a prominent clergyman.
It has some coarse parts due to its age and firing techniques as well as materials.
It was set and then removed at a later time, as shown by the small missing parts, especially on the edges. See photos.
The figure's gaze is very expressive and directed towards the observer.
