Stunning group of very rare and ancient souls of Purgatory or “pezzentelle” souls.
Made of polychrome terracotta.
Height: approximately 30 cm
“In Campania the cult of Purgatory spread in the early 1600s, when the new Counter-Reformation church proposed it as one of the most important religious practices in order to create, through suffrages, a liturgical bond between the living and the dead.
The city of Naples was, and still remains today, the center of the arcane cult of Purgatory."
