J. Steenstrup - On the Alternation of Generations or the propagation and development of Animals through alternate .. - 1845
Biology, Natural History - Quantity: 1 - Book

Translated by G. Busk. 139 pp. 3 folded lithograph plates (cleaned). H. Calf.

* Rare first English edition, translated from the German version by George Busk. It is the first comprehensive description of the form of reproduction named by Steenstrup "metagenesis", for the alternation of sexual and asexual reproduction. This has previously been described by Chamisso, but Steenstrup included significantly more observations and provided an important chapter on its meaning.
Johannes Japetus Smith Steenstrup (1813-1897) was a Danish zoologist and biologist. In 1842 he discovered the possibility of using the subfossils of the Postglacial as a means of interpreting climate changes and correlated vegetation change, which he called succession in the recent past. He sent Charles Darwin both information and specimens for his extensive study of barnacles (Cirripedia) between (1846-1854).
Added in this volume are publications by the Ray Society by Zuccarini, Morphology of the Conferae with 5 folding plates and C. Nägeli, on the Nuclei, formation and growth of vegetable cells (with 2 plates) and two more. All plates in this part waterstained at edges and one plate cut short.
