The artist belongs to a renowned school of Neapolitan sculptors that in the late 18th and early 19th century stood out for their great skill and creativity.
For Varlese, too, the standard setter was Vincenzo Gemito (1852 - 1929).
A man of humble origins, Varlese became an internationally renowned artist; his portrait of Verdi and the sculptures depicting a fisherman and a young fisherman are very famous and became a classic of Neapolitan sculpture.
