In 1978 the SBB commissioned the firm Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) and Brown Boverie & Cie (BBC) to design and build four prototypes of this universal electric locomotive, the Re 4/4 IV. The locomotives had a continuous power output of 4.475 kW and a achieved a maximum speed of 160 km/h. All four locomotives were delivered and commissioned in 1982. The locomotives were mainly used around Lake Geneva and sometimes also on the route between Zurich and St. Margrethen.
Re 4/4 represents;
R = locomotive which can be operated at high speed in the curved sections and has a speed higher than 110 km/h.
e = Electric locomotive.
4 = Powered on four axles.
4 = Tender with four axles.
Originally the four locomotives of the SBB had consecutive company numbers and all four were of different colours.
