Anthonius de Heide (born in the Dutch province of Zeeland 1646 - died ca. 1695) was a medical doctor. This publication is his main work. With the help of a primitive microscope he makes here a detailed description of the mussel ( edible bivalves of the marine family Mytilidae ). He is the first to observe and describe the mussel's filter feeding mechanism with the cilia and their ''motus radiosus or motus tremulus''. This is a first and original edition.
The original binding is a little worn but solid and attractive. Small hole at foot of spine. One folding plate torn.
Rare and collectible.
