Willy Ronis was born on August 14th, 1910 in the 9th district of Paris and died on September 11th, 2009 in the 20th district of Paris. He was a French photographer, laureate of the National Grand Prix of Photography in 1979 and of the Nadar Prize in 1981.
He was one of the most important representatives of French Humanist Photography along with Édouard Boubat, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Robert Doisneau, Izis and Sabine Weiss. He defined the humanist school as ‘the gaze of the photographer who loves human beings’.
In the 1950s, Willy Ronis campaigned within the Group of XV to ensure that photography was recognized as an artistic discipline.
