Ceremonial trumpet for headhunting, bugle (1) - Wood - Iatmul - Sepik (central), Papua New Guinea

Description
Ceremonial trumpet for headhunting, bugle (1) - Wood - Iatmul - Sepik (central), Papua New Guinea
2nd half 20th century - Excellent condition, barely used with minimal signs of wear

Ceremonial head-hunting trumpet (horn) carved by a master carver from one piece of wood; the inside is hollow with a hole for blowing into. Collection of Sir Hugo Berghuser, former Minister of Culture and Mayor of Port Moresby. The horn is very elaborately carved, in an almost baroque style, indicating that it is from the last half of the 20th century, when head-hunting had already ceased.
