The coin was struck to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson's death at the battle of Trafalgar, where the British fleet decisively defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet. Nelson was shot by a French sniper on the warship Redoubtable which was engaged in close combat with the HMS Victory, where Nelson was commanding the English fleet.
