Classic mask of the Punu - Wood - Okuyi - Punu - Gabon - Equatorial Guinea

Description
Classic mask of the Punu - Wood - Okuyi - Punu - Gabon - Equatorial Guinea
Fair condition, used with visible signs of wear

Provenance: Jean Pierre Laprugne Galerie, Mazarine, Paris, then Austria. collection.

This okuyi has been made in the pure classic style of the famous white masks of the Ogowe. The scarification on the forehead is typical of the tribe, the mouth and upper cheeks have been painted with a red clay earth pigment. The face itself has been coloured white with kaolin; through being used a long time, it has naturally rubbed off a little. The portrayed hairstyle is typical of the tribe and has been browned with red hot blade of a knife. It has an ethereal face; one can surmise that in the religious world of the Africans, one would see in this depiction, a beautiful girl from beyond the grave. A wonderful patina covers the mask, on the inside also, and it has clear signs of wear and tear. A superb piece which shouldn’t be missing from any serious collection.
